Latest News from NWSC

It’s a thumbs up from Ormiston Victory Academy.

During the summer of 2014 NWSC forged a link with this local High school and taught a small group of students every Monday from 3pm till 5pm. The program was a fantastic success and was massively oversubscribed resulting in the school booking a full days private hire and ferrying children to and from the club all day. This program gave many children the chance to experience water skiing and helped us to increase public awareness of who we are and what we do. The program was such a success we have already secured a twelve week booking for the 2015 season, speaking as one of the coaches involved last year I can’t wait !

New jetty

The old jetty has been replaced with this wonderful new monster of a jetty. Built over winter the new jetty has been specially designed to allow disabled access to the water, and takes us one step closer to being an inclusive club. This jetty has been grant funded and built by the Bluebird Deaf Water Ski Club, well done to all involved. During the summer of this year we will be trying to secure a grant to fund special training workshops for our coaches and the purchase of special equipment which will then enable us to teach water skiing to those with physical impairments, watch this space for updates. If you are disabled or work with a disabled group and would be interested in organising a session please get in touch with the chairman (see “contact us”).

New Boat Arrives

NWSC’s boat officer Steve takes delivery of a brand new Malibu Response LX. Delivered on the 1st of March the new boat is a beauty. This year we chose an all white hull with an open bow seating area. The LX is a model up on our previous boat and packs an additional 50hp making it our most powerful boat ever. Having tested it in the slalom course a few times already I can tell you it reaches top speed much earlier and will be far better suited to our lake.

NWSC have seven UKCC Level 2 Coaches

Congratulations to Dan Attwell, Julie North, Justin Frior, Colin Byer, Danielle Shorten, Steve Shorten and Ian Burke for all passing their UKCC Level 2 Coaching exam for Waterskiing and Wakeboarding. The final practical test took place on Sunday 21st July at our lakes by two British Water Ski & Wakeboard officials after a mountain of learning material and written paperwork.! The Norwich Water Ski Club is committed to attaining nationally recognised skills advocated by our governing body and I can tell you their is a sigh of relief from those who participated after starting this course in March this year. Well done to all

Welcome to our new members

Welcome to Chris Hall and Jon Clarke with his delightful daughter Isla. Chris is a new skier but is making quick progress but then again you kind of expect that as he is now a part of the Shorten clan. Jon is local to the club as he lives in Costessey and can already mono sk and Isla is beginner but was skiing on her first go and I think she is going to do very well.

Thanks to Phase 3 Electrical

A big thanks to Jon Phillips, Managing Diredtor of Phase 3 Electrical in Norwich for updating the electrical system in our clubhouse. Jon and his men fitted new enclosed lighting and performed our regular safety tests and as ever we couldn't have wished for a better, polite and effecient job. We must also thank Newey and Eyre in Norwich for donating the lights and other equipment. We look forward to seeing them all for a ski soon!

The sun has arrived!

Well its about time but we are nevertheless grateful that the weather has changed in the second half of April. Our lake warms very quickly and now that the biting winds have subsided the drysuits have been dispensed with and the shortie wetsuits are out! Due to some hard work over the winter and the climate changing the whole site is starting to bloom nicely- with the only blot on the landscape is our tricky mole who keeps evading our humane trap. We have had some busy days with skiing in the last two weeks with everyone getting ski fit and back to where they left off at the end of last season. The Private Hire days are popular again with return bookings from previous years- check out the Private Hire page- a great way to spend a day.

UKCC Coaching Course

March has seen a number of our members participate in the UKCC based Level 2 Coaching Certificate in Water Skiing & Wakeboarding. This is a Nationally recognised qualification for our sport encompassing the latest practices for coaching and to attain this qualification there is a lot of classroom based learning as well as practicals on land and water. The first 4 days have been completed this month but over the coming months we will be logging our coaching for a final assessment later in the year. As part of the certificate we are all CRB (now DBS) checked, completing a Child Welfare safety course and refeshing our First Aid certifcates. This is quite an intensive course and thanks to all the members who are taking part so we can increase the professional standards at our club. We would also like to thank our Governing body, British Water Ski and Wakeboard for their help with the course, not to mention Mike Lock and Matt Crowhurst for running the course, and Patricia Rollinson from Bluebird Water Ski Club for organising and gaining the funding. The weather wasn't that kind to us and the lake looked like the sea but it could have been worse!

Welcome to the 2013 Season

Although skiing has continued over the winter, right up until the lake was completely frozen over, our new season kicks off in earnest April 1st. Hopefully the warmer weather will start to appear and we can look forward to a cracking season!

Well done to all our skiers and boarders !

Congratulations to all our members for their skiing achievements last year. It has been noticeable how everyone has progressed but the highlight has to be young Harry learning to barefoot. This is not an easy discipline to master but it didn't take him long to barefoot unaided, apart from a big grin, with proud dad Will watching in the boat. Well done Harry!!

Skiers from the Eastern Region fared well in the British Water Ski Leagues and some of our own members put in a good show including:-

Danielle Shorten

Steve Shorten

Colin Byer
